Scientists are speculating about whether or not our brains are programmed to have a belief in God. New studies show that, contrary to earlier opinion, we do not have a single God spot in the brain that is responsible for spiritual enlightenment. Instead, a group of different brain regions work together to bring people what they describe as mystical experiences.
In LiveScience.com, Ker Than quotes researcher Mario Beauregard as saying, “The main goal of the study was to identify the neural correlates of a mystical experience. This does not diminish the meaning and value of such an experience, and neither does it confirm or disconfirm the existence of God.” In the study, 15 cloistered nuns, ranging in age from 23 to 64, had their brains scanned while remembering the most intense mystical experience they ever had as members of their religious order.
