Today, we acknowledge the passing of a light and, in a way, the passing of a torch.

Hanny el-Zeini, who wrote in collaboration with his friend, Om Sety, died in November, 2013. Their 1983 book, Abydos: Holy City of Ancient Egypt remains the ultimate guide book to this extraordinary temple.

Hanny was also a collaborator with Jonathan Cott on heir best-selling book, “The Search for Om Sety,” which is easily one of the best documented stories of reincarnation ever told.

Satellite archaeology researcher Angela Micol has located what could be a very ancient pyramid complex in southern Egypt. The complex could also be the remains of a fortified settlement built in later times, during the Ptolemaic period. From above, though, the structures appear to be far more deeply eroded than would be the case if they were just 2,000 years old. If they are not natural formations, they are probably thousands of years old.

In a recent NASA satellite survey of Egypt, archaeologists discovered 17 pyramids that had been buried in the sand, as well as more than 1,000 tombs and 3,000 ancient settlements. Ground level excavations have already confirmed the existence of two of the pyramids. Ancient Egyptian buildings were made of mud brick, which is denser than the sand surrounding them, which allowed the satellites to spot the buried shapes. The scientists think that, using satellites, they may eventually discover an entire lost city.
