An archaeological expedition aimed at plumbing the secrets of Chichen Itza’s underworld of the gods has uncovered the well-preserved remains of ancient humans and extinct animals that date back to the last ice age–far more than what the expedition’s members bargained for when they set out to map and explore the sacred network of Mayan caves. The nature of some of the fossils found there also hinted at the occurrence of a "catastrophic event" that embedded some of the bones in the walls of the cave.

Archaeological sites in India and Israel have yielded new finds that once again illustrate the probability that some groups of people left Africa much earlier than previously assumed. Although a number of these migrations have been found to have occurred throughout humanity’s early history, the earliest movement was assumed to have taken place between 130,000, and 115,000 years ago.  Two new discoveries from India, and Israel may point to an even earlier beginning to the nomadic culture of the walking people, one that might very well have taken place more than 385,000 years ago.

A new scanning technology using deep-penetrating cosmic rays has revealed a large, 100-foot-long chamber inside the Great Pyramid at Giza. This chamber, simply called "ScanPyramids Big Void" for the time being, sits high above the Grand Gallery, at roughly the height of the top of the King’s Chamber, and appears to be the same dimensions as the Grand Gallery itself.

Do you believe in Santa Claus?

Archaeologists in Turkey believe they may have found the true tomb of Hágios Nikólaos, better known in the west as Saint Nicholas, the fourth-century saint famous for his charity work and gift-giving, that eventually led to the modern-day legend of Santa Claus. Scholars have been questioning the validity of the remains interred in the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, Italy, that are traditionally attributed to Nicholas, based on documentation retrieved from the region. Now, recent archaeological surveys have revealed an intact temple and burial site underneath Saint Nicholas Church in Antalya, Turkey, that may hold Saint Nicholas’ true remains.
