Between promising studies regarding the medical uses of cannabis and it’s obvious recreational use, the legitimization of marijuana for mainstream consumption appears to be a forgone conclusion, with four states already having decriminalized the drug, and many more eyeing similar legislation. But along with mainstream acceptance of a given substance also comes the pitfall of corporate meddling: cannabis, being a biological organism, runs the risk of having agriculture companies like Monsanto patenting the plant’s genes, a move that would allow them to have legal authority over who gets to grow the plant.

Farmers in developing countries are dying in their thousands from a mysterious kidney disorder, which has been termed as "Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology" (CKDu).

The disease is running rife through farmers from the rice paddy regions of Sri Lanka, and in El Salavdor, it is the second leading cause of death among male adults, posing a greater risk to health there than diabetes, AIDS, and leukemia combined. A new study has now linked the unexplained deaths to the use of a herbicide patented by the giant biochemical company, Monsanto.

Hungarian officials have burned 1,000 acres of genetically modified corn after it was discovered that the fields contained a mix of natural corn and the genetically modified variety. It was believed that the genetically modified corn was the product created by the Monsanto company, which is sold around the world, including the European Union. It is not allowed to be sold in Hungary, because the Hungarian government has been concerned about an increasing number of studies linking it to health issues.read more

A third of all honeybee colonies in the United States died last winter. This is a catastrophic rate of decline which, if it continues, will threaten the national food supply beginning within a few years. The rate of decline is roughly twice what the bee population can sustain. Last March, the California almond crop was threatened by a lack of bees for pollination. One third of all food consumed in the United States comes from plants that are pollinated by bees, and the failure of these food sources would lead to serious food shortages.
