There is a place in Siberia known as Yamal, which literally translates as "the end of the world."

It is an area that is notorious for earth-shattering events, as this was the region where the most dangerous meteor in recent history struck in 1908 with devastating results. Thankfully, the blast occurred in a relatively uninhabited zone, but forests were levelled over a distance of 2000 square kilometers (1242 miles).

Yamal is now the site of another unlikely happening in the form of a huge, unexplained crater, estimated by observers to be around 50 meters (164 feet) wide and 70 meters (229 feet) deep with water from melting permafrost cascading down its sides into snow-covered depths.

If Vladimir Putin had personally ordered the shoot-down of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 last week, events could not have played into his hands more perfectly. In fact, the result has been so valuable to Putin, that it seems possible that he did take a calculated risk here and order the missile to be fired at the plane.

It wasn’t just any plane that was shot down. It was the only plane to cross the combat zone that day that was packed with Dutch nationals. On the surface, it would seem that the last thing Putin would want to do would be to create such friction between him and his biggest western trading partner.

Breaking news indicates that yet another Malaysian Airlines plane has been lost. Malaysia Airlines confirmed in a Tweet that it "has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow."

Later reports have now suggested that flight MH 17 was shot down and has crashed near a town in the eastern half of the country. It was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew members, all of whom are thought to have been killed in the crash.

As Asteroid 2012 DA14 approached Earth, a significant meteor strike took place in central Russia. Most experts do not believe that the two events were related, and NASA has confirmed that the asteroid has not broken up. However, smaller debris is sometimes present near asteroids, and is not generally detectable, so it is possible that such debris comprised the meteor.
