Former Nevada Senator Harry Reid is calling for what may be a long-overdue congressional hearing into the subject of UFOs. Reid was one of the key players that procured funding for the recently-revealed Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, a Pentagon study into anomalous aerial phenomenon that ran from 2007 through 2012, and since open interest in has been renewed by the release of videos of UFOs by the US Navy, now may be the time to re-address the mystery.

In a November speaking engagement at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & TV, acclaimed film director Guillermo del Toro described an encounter with a UFO near Cerro del Cuatro, Mexico. Being a master storyteller of fantasy movies with lavish visuals such as Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, it should come as no surprise that he was disappointed by the otherwise mundane appearance of what he called a "crappy" UFO — although he says that the encounter was the most terrifying experience of his life.

Over the weekend, the New York Times published an article regarding a series of videos released by the Defense Department’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program that depict unidentified flying objects, recorded by ATFLIR equipment aboard Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets. In a separate interview, one of the pilots, Commander David Fravor, offered his own account of one of these encounters with a UFO off of the California coast.
