The highlighted area above the horizon indicates an unidentified object and/or phenomena.
The announcement that Trump would authorize the release of government files related to unidentified flying objects occurred on April 29, 2026, at the same event where Trump welcomed the four astronauts of NASA’s Artemis II mission to the White House. This mission was marked by a lunar flyby that laid the foundation for the upcoming Artemis IV mission, scheduled for sometime in 2028, which will land the first humans on the Moon since 1972.
The Pentagon’s newest release of UFO-related records has brought renewed attention to one of the most enduring mysteries of the Space Age: the unexplained phenomena reported by astronauts during America’s missions to the Moon.
Among the most discussed documents are transcripts and photographs connected to Apollo 17, the final crewed lunar mission in 1972. According to the newly highlighted material, astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt, and Ronald Evans described strange flashes, drifting objects, and unexplained lights during three consecutive days of the mission.
One report describes “very bright particles or fragments” tumbling nearby in space. Schmitt compared the spectacle to “the Fourth of July.” Cernan later described intense flashes of light that appeared between his eyes “like a train headlight,” along with rotating luminous effects that seemed connected to objects outside the spacecraft.
The Pentagon’s release also references an Apollo 17 photograph showing three bright lights in a triangular formation above the lunar surface. Officials stated that there is “no consensus” regarding the anomaly and that preliminary government analysis suggests the image feature “is potentially the result of a physical object in the scene.”
None of these incidents are entirely new. Many researchers, historians, and space enthusiasts have discussed Apollo-era anomalies for decades. What has changed is that the material is now being emphasized within the context of the government’s broader Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena disclosure effort.
That timing has become especially notable because the first wave of document releases coincides with NASA’s Artemis program and renewed human exploration of the Moon. There was symbolic overlap between the Artemis astronauts’ visit to the White and the teasing of the May 8, 2026, U.S. Department of War UAP records portal being made available to the public.
The Moon now appears repeatedly throughout the emerging disclosure narrative.
The Apollo 17 reports are not isolated cases. Newly highlighted files also include incidents from Apollo 11, Apollo 12, Gemini VII, and Skylab.
During Gemini VII in 1965 — years before orbital traffic became crowded with satellites and debris — astronaut Frank Borman reportedly described seeing a “bogey” and a debris field outside the spacecraft. Jim Lovell observed what he called a “brilliant body” against the darkness of space surrounded by “trillions of particles.” Handwritten notes attached to the file reportedly labeled the event a “UFO sighting.”
That historical context matters. Some unexplained sightings occurred before modern satellite constellations existed, limiting easy explanations involving orbital clutter or known commercial technology.
Apollo 11 astronauts also reportedly discussed several unexplained observations during their historic 1969 journey, including bright objects, flashes of light inside the cabin, and an unidentified object traveling alongside the spacecraft that astronauts speculated might have been part of the Saturn V rocket.
Apollo 12 transcripts describe astronauts witnessing particles and illuminated objects apparently moving above the lunar surface.
NASA has never stated that astronauts encountered extraterrestrial craft or evidence of alien activity during these missions. In many cases, astronauts themselves suggested possible technical explanations involving debris, rocket stages, reflections, or physiological effects caused by radiation and spaceflight conditions.
Still, the persistence of these reports — now resurfacing through official channels — underscores how deeply the Moon has remained connected to the modern UFO story.
As Artemis prepares humanity’s return to lunar space for the first time since Apollo 17, the government’s renewed emphasis on these historical incidents is unlikely to quiet public curiosity. If anything, it reminds us that some of the strangest questions of the Apollo era were never fully resolved.

There is no such thing as the Department of War. It is the Department of Defense, and it will remain so until and unless Congress formally changes its name, no matter what the former FOX News host calls it.
THANKYOU! Thankyou!
It is the Department of Defense. I could barely read this and previous article as I am so dismayed that this site would join in the reckless changing of terms of this administration. Nest will be proof of UAP over the “Gulf of America”. Words matter. So disappointed with this here.
I can understand your concern. However, the documents were officially released by the U.S. Department of War. The official press release uses this name and the URL of the document portal is: https://www.war.gov/UFO. We just report the news as accurately as possible.
Thank you. It is, however, a “secondary name” to call it Dept of War. It would require an act of Congress to legally change Dept of Defense to “Dept. Of War”. I appreciate your POV.
It is significant that there is now an acknowledgment to the public that unexplained phenomenon , uaps/ufos , exist. This alone is hard to believe, given that mentioning anything like this previously would end your career. The only question is how far will it go? Instead of far away, momentary videos of uaps, will we get hours long videos, with close ups? Or more?
