Eclipse, Perseids and Six Planets Converge on August 12

As NASA chases the Moon’s shadow at 50,000 feet, skywatchers will experience an unusual convergence of a total solar eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower and a six-planet parade.

Wednesday will bring an unusual concentration of celestial events: a total solar eclipse, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower and a six-planet parade — while NASA takes to the stratosphere to study what happens when the Moon’s shadow crosses Earth.

The Aug. 12, 2026, total eclipse will sweep across Greenland, Iceland and Spain, according to NASA. A NASA-funded team will chase the Moon’s shadow aboard a WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft flying at 50,000 feet, carrying four cameras capable of imaging the Sun’s corona in visible and infrared wavelengths. NASA says the cameras will capture at least 20 images per second.

Flying at about 460 mph will extend the aircraft’s view of the corona to nearly three minutes, compared with a maximum of 2 minutes, 18 seconds from the ground, NASA reports. Scientists hope the observations will improve understanding of solar prominences, the million-degree corona and its relationship to the solar wind.

The Guardian reports that researchers are particularly interested in processes that may help explain why the corona is dramatically hotter than the Sun’s surface, including small but powerful events called nanoflares. The research also has practical implications: Understanding the Sun is essential to understanding space weather capable of affecting astronauts, satellites, communications and electrical systems on Earth.

And the eclipse will not be the sky’s only attraction.

According to The American Meteor Society, the Perseid meteor shower will peak Wednesday night into Thursday morning, coinciding with the eclipse and a six-planet parade. NASA estimates that under ideal conditions, observers could see 50 to 100 meteors per hour; the American Meteor Society gives a more conservative estimate of 30 to 50 per hour from rural locations. The Perseids are produced by debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

Those planning to watch the eclipse should take precautions. NASA warns that, except during the brief period of totality when the Moon completely obscures the Sun’s bright face, looking directly at the Sun without specialized solar-viewing protection is unsafe. Eclipse glasses or a safe handheld solar viewer should be used during the partial phases before and after totality; ordinary sunglasses are not adequate. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes require properly mounted solar filters rather than eclipse glasses.
